Cabinet with Drawers Open

Cabinets (cont'd)

:: Drawers

Usually our kitchens feature a lot of drawers on full extension hardware. Drawer cabinets hold almost twice as much as door cabinets. It's also much easier to see what's there, and retrieve it without stooping. Drawers work great for spices, big pots and pans, lids, even cereal boxes, a trash can, or a compost bin, and most other things in base cabinets.

We build drawers three ways.Wooden drawers feature dovetail drawer boxes, and Accuride full extension hardware. We are also beginning to use Blum’s Metabox® drawer system. This is a European system which replaces the drawer box with wide drawer hardware which doubles as the drawer side. This full extension hardware seems to work great, and we think will save perhaps 40% of drawer cost. We also use Blum's Tandem ™ concealed undermount soft-close drawer slides. There are advantages and disadvantages to each system.

:: Open Shelves

Though we build overhead cabinets, we use a lot of open shelves. They save a lot of money compared to enclosed cabs, and make the contents more visible. Things are easier to reach, because shallow shelves can be placed lower on the wall sometimes, perhaps right down near the splash.
